Oh, yes, prepare for the random! This is going to be fun! Alright, put on your helmets and let’s go!
So, my name is Katie Thrift, I’m 19 years old, and I’m taking Diverse Cultures and their Music for January term this year.
Before coming to Converse and getting overloaded on Western Art Music, I had been exposed to a lot of different music… My parents like to tell a story about when I was three and sang “That’s my story and I sticky to it!” I pretty sure that is a country song.
There was a lot of country music played in my house as a child, and there still is today. This kind of stinks for me, because country music isn’t my favorite; it’s a bit too twangy for my taste.
There was also lots of classic rock – I can remember singing along to the Eagles and Styx when I was five or six years old.
Amongst all that, when I was three, my family moved to Okinawa, Japan thanks to the United States Air Force (Dad was NOT happy!) I can’t really remember much of living there – I was age three through six – but I know I was exposed to music. I can still do ‘Head – Shoulders – Knees and Toes’ and ‘The More We Get Together’ in Japanese to this day.
It was thanks to our move to Japan that I got into a certain genre of television – Anime! Oh, yes, how I love Anime! I can actually remember watching Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z in the original Japanese! How awesome is that? But aside from the flashing lights and pretty colors that caught my attention, I’ve always loved the music in played in the background as well as the opening and closing themes.
That strange love of Anime music has continued to this day. (No lie, I’m currently listening to the song Again by Yui, which was the first opening theme song for the amazing anime Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Go YouTube the awesome-ness people!) Needless to say, Japanese Rock and Pop Music have a special place in my heart. As does Korean Pop (DBSK anyone? Again, YouTube it for further information!)
I also have a special love for anytime of Celtic and Irish music, thanks to my sister. She fell in love with it and it was all I heard for months at a time… I came to love it, needless to say.
Now-a-days, I mostly fill my ears with Christian music, mainly of the Rock and contemporary genres. Flyleaf is amazing, as are RED and Skillet. I listen to them pretty much every day during the car ride to Converse.
There’s so much more I love to listen to! Just so you all know my favorite music group of all time is Evanescence… They’re amazing, despite the lead singer’s idiocy and slight arrogance.
To sum it up, in my life, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of music:
· Country
· Classic rock
· Heavy metal/ death metal/ straight up metal
· Christian rock
· Japanese rock and pop
· Korean rock and pop
· American pop (didn’t exactly get to that)
· American Musicals
Yep, that about sums it up!
On a quick side note, this 500 word limit is quite difficult for me. Just saying.
http://www.playlist.com/playlist/21303899147Here is the link to a playlist I made of differnt anime music - some is in Japanes, some is in English, done by a voice actor who works alot in Japanese anime (He was actually a voice in Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood). Enjoy!
All good, Katie--and I'm looking forward to your group's presentation on Japan. You know, I got to eat Korean food for the first time last fall (in Greenville), and it's really good!
ReplyDeleteAs to the blog writing, a few requests: Don't space so much between your little paragraphs--it makes your writing appear more disjointed than it actually is. And proofread a bit better, ok? Oh, and don't just tell us to go to YouTube--post a link! Do you think we can actually concentrate long enough to go look for it on our own? :-)
I really enjoyed reading your blog. Growing up with mainly classical music in my life, you've really sparked my interest in checking out other genres. I need to check out these music bands you mentioned (Evanescence, Flyleaf, etc)
ReplyDeleteand yay anime!
I LOVE YOU. :)
ReplyDeleteI would recommend you watch Taiyou no Uta starting Yui, but they took it of the web because of copyright issues. I fell in love with her music because of that movie xD!
As for Korean pop, you have to check out "Lucifer" and "Ring Ding Dong" by Shinee as well as "Sorry Sorry" by Super Junior.
I love listening to Flyleaf and Evanescence too!
I'm also very jealous that you got to live in Japan xD. I've been there but only for a day...= =;
